The oldest building methods use the earth as a building material. Adobe, cob, rammed earth, and earth-sheltered construction, are being used more and more as alternatives to conventional types of building. In particular the idea of covering a structure with living earth and plants, and using the thermal stability and security provided by the proximity to the ground, is very appealing in a primal way. However, this type of construction has always been difficult and expensive to achieve, adequate ventilation and adequate water-proofing in this type of construction have never been easy with traditional methods, and often the result is overbuilt, requiring an extremely strong structure that does not collaborate with the earth surrounding it. The BIOTEKT system has addressed these problems in an entirely new way, using the age old methods of building with earth in conjunction with the space-age technology of composite materials.

How Green are we?

So where do we stand with these four factors?

  • Our buildings are extremely energy efficient, easily saving 70% on heating-cooling bills and potentially up to 100% when passive-solar principles are used in the design.

  • Biotekt homes and buildings will last forever with very little maintenance.

  • 90% or more of the material used in our composite shells is recycled.

  • Only about 5% of a Biotekt home's mass is composed of high-tech materials that are packaged and sent to you in our kits. The rest is local, low tech, and easily available..


Why Composites?

Plastics have a bad rep environmentally for one BIG reason: They are almost always used for disposable items like wrappers, bags, etc. etc., even though they are among the most durable materials available... So that all this plastic garbage is accumulating all over the planet, contaminating the oceans and creating a problem for which there are no easy answers. What are we proposing to do about it? We have two axioms which we believe will change the world:

1- Never use plastics for disposables, only for things which are meant to last a long time.

2- Meanwhile, recycle as much of the disposable plastic already produced as possible.


To give you an idea, each Biotekt building recycles about 15 bottles per square square foot. So that a 1000 square foot house will recycle about 15,000 bottles.. That's a good sized mountain of bottles, saved from polluting the worlds oceans and beaches...


The composites we make use only recycled PET (Polyethylene Terapthalate) plastics that were originally used for items that are FDA approved for storage of foods and water for human consumption. Not only are they safe, these materials are the industry standard for environments which have to be 100% sterile and stable such as laboratories and hospital operating rooms.
